Civet coffee harvesting and production takes place in Barangay Cabilao and Barangay Rodero in the Municipality of Makilala, Province of North Cotabato, Philippines. The project has brought hope that they will finally be liberated from their present impoverished condition. These communities have suffered for decades from extreme poverty conditions brought about by several factors. The continued armed clashes between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the secessionist group, the New People’s Army (NPA), during the 70s until the early 90s, has brought trauma to the farmers which resulted to abandonment of coffee farms, which used to be their main source of livelihood. Another factor that caused their poverty situation is the continued marginalization of the Indigenous Peoples in the Philippines, and the lack of attention given by government to address their needs. They have been constantly pushed farther to the frontier denying them of their basic needs such as education, health care and other social infrastructure.
All of the produce come from small farmers. Aside from the regular premium coffee that the farmer’s organization is producing, the civet coffee that they produce enables the organization to take a share of the member-farmer’s profits. The farmer’s organization uses the proceeds for activities such as skills enhancement, organization building, exposure, and later, as the organization grows, financing of member-farmers’ production and marketing needs.
